Protecting Our Environment

Our store is situated in the rural village of Utiku. We are surrounded by vast farmland and rolling hills. The beauty of this region is a constant reminder to look after our natural environment.

We take our eco footprint seriously. We think that you should know what we are doing at The Wool Company to minimise our impact on the planet. So far, we have commenced the following strategies for better sustainable outcomes for the environment:

Made in New Zealand

It is important to us that our garments and yarn are made right here in New Zealand. Our Merino is farmed in the beautiful Awatere Valley. We partner with New Zealand clothing manufacturers and suppliers to ensure that the process is fully NZ made, working conditions for all staff are ethical, and local charities and communities are supported through our business.

Our Design Process

Our garments are designed with you in mind- our customer. Whilst we are not a fashion store- we do value style, and we aim to create garments that have a timeless appeal and long-lasting quality. Our retail assistants offer style advice to help you get the best fit, so your purchase goes a long way. We never operate on a whim of the seasons fashion, so we don’t waste products, we order stock responsibly, and every garment is carefully selected based on customer demand.

Natural Fibres

Our products are made up of natural fibres- merino and possum- which are 100% renewable, recyclable, and biodegradable.

We recognise that synthetic fibres are causing unprecedented damage to our ecosystem. Synthetic fibres (i.e. polyester and acyclic) are made up of plastic. The plastic microfibres are released into our waterways which is leading to ocean pollution and detrimentally affecting marine life.

Our fibres are natural and will break down in the wash. They are completely biodegradable back into the earth.

Waste Management

We are working towards paperless picking and stock receipting. This will reduce needless paper consumption due to less frequent paper printing.

Less Plastic Packaging

Our compostable courier bags are made from cornstarch PLA (A renewable and sustainable resource as they can grow and be harvested in one season) and other biodegradable materials such as PBAT (a biodegradable thermoplastic).

PLA and PBAT are internationally recognised as biodegradable and compostable - leaving behind no toxic residues when composted.

We are transitioning away from plastic to corn-starch bags for all our lightweight garments.

Our suppliers are trialling alternative packaging solutions to plastic and are committed to reducing their plastic use.

In our shop our customers receive a reusable eco canvas bag with most purchases.

Our surroundings

We have planted native plants around our premises to attract native species and bee pollination.

We manage our grounds regularly and dispose of our waste responsibly and frequently.
